Klondike

The game most people simply call Solitaire, with big, clear cards.

The aim

Move all 52 cards onto four piles, one for each suit. Each pile starts with the ace and goes up in order to the king.

How the cards are laid out

How to play, step by step

  1. A card can go onto a column when it is one lower and the other colour. A red 6 can go on a black 7, for example.
  2. A run of cards that already follows that pattern, such as a black 9, a red 8 and a black 7, can move together.
  3. When you move the cards off a face-down card, it turns over by itself.
  4. Only a king can go into an empty column, either on its own or with the run below it.
  5. Aces go onto the suit piles. Then the 2 of the same suit goes on top, then the 3, and so on up to the king.
  6. When you are stuck, tap the deck to turn over a new card. When the deck is used up, tap its empty place to turn the cards back over and go through them again. You can do this as many times as you like.

If you need a card back from a suit pile, you can move it down onto a column again.

Turning one card or three

Turning one card at a time lets you reach every card in the deck, which makes the game gentler. Turning three at a time means you can only play the top card of each three, which makes it harder. A game number gives the same deal either way, so you can try a game both ways.
